It’s Time For an Oil Change!

by Dr. Sasha MarinaccioDr Sasha crop newer

Have you ever received a postcard from our office stating “it’s been 6 months since your last adjustment!” and wondered how 6 months has gone by? Here at The Offices at Riverview Chiropractic, our doctors realize how busy life gets and therefore, how fast the time can go by since your last visit.

checkupThat is why we like to send a friendly reminderthat it’s time for check up– and often times, patients report that they’ve been meaning to come in for quite a while. Just like your car has a maintenance schedule to keep it running well for years to come, our bodies need regular maintenance too!

Why do we encourage patients to come in on a regular basis? Much like a semi-annual dental exam and cleaning, it’s important to have a spinal exam and adjustment. In the period of six months, a lot can happen, whether young or old.

In terms of the physical body, nicer weather means more time working in the garden, enjoyingplay-ball2 the outdoors or playing sports. Maybe you’ve had a job change and now you’re more sedentary or performing more labor than you’re used to. Perhaps you’ve began a new exercise routine and your body is acclimating to new training demands. These physical changes, in addition to injuries and trauma, can compound over time. Have you ever told your doctor “I have no idea how I threw my back out! All I did was lean forward to put on my shoe!”? It’s rarely a herculean event that brings patients into the office for an acute bout of pain. But when we practice prevention with chiropractic, we can lessen the risk that these types of events occur, by sharpening the ability of the nervous system.

On the other hand, six months can also bring about Stressed-outdifferent mental and emotional challenges. Stress from work, family, illness, grief, etc. can build and manifest in physical ways. The loss of a loved one or caring for close ones in need can be very difficult and can change the way we eat, sleep, are able to get physical activity, and maintain healthy relationships. We often encourage patients who are in a difficult season of life to be adjusted more regularly in an effort to support the body during a challenging time. More regular care during these seasons can help reduce anxiety, headaches, and muscle tension from stress. A periodic check up with your chiropractor may help you evaluate those needs and make other healthy changes accordingly.

consultation-female-patientWhatever the case may be, we want our bodies to be in the best position to adapt to stress and change. A nervous system that is in good working order keeps the body’s intricate daily processes in balance, always ready to adapt! While we may send a postcard if we haven’t seen you in six months, understand that some need more frequent tune-ups than that. I encourage you to talk with your chiropractor about a maintenance schedule that is right for you, based on your lifestyle and situation. We only get one body on this Earth… let’s do all we can to treat it well!
