Hello everyone! Today’s newsletter will focus on a topic we have not covered in awhile. I thought of the topic while talking with a friend of mine (not a patient at Riverview) a few nights ago. My friend is a male in his early 60’s. He is a car mechanic who has worked his body physically over the decades of his life. His job involves a lot of repetitive activities and various non-ergonomic positions some times for long stents of time all at once. My friend was talking to me about his lower back and it went something like this (edited for time’s sake and extraneous material): my lower back hurts in the morning and gets progressively worse throughout the day. I have pain in my lower back and it feels like my back is locked up and the muscles are so tight! The pain is a burning pain which can stay in my lower back or go down my leg. Sometimes my foot goes numb. It hurts more especially when I turn or bend.

So, what condition does my friend have you may ask? Any guesses? The condition my friend suffers from is what is called a herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) more commonly called a “herniated disc”, “slipped disc” or “disc bulge”. So, what is a disc herniation you may ask, I’ll tell you, but first it is helpful to understand the normal anatomy of an intervertebral disc (IVD). The IVD are structures sandwiched in-between the vertebrae of the spine. They act as cushions to absorb the shocks and forces that act on the spine. For example, the discs help absorb the force when you jump or run in order to reduce stress on the vertebrae. The discs also provide protection for nerves which exit the spinal column. Without these discs there would be less room for the nerves to exit the spine. The discs also allow the rigid bones of the spine to be more flexible and mobile. The IVD offers all these wonderful functions, all without our knowledge or any input from us, as long as their structure is intact.

When the structure of the IVD breaks down, the outer fibrous layers (nucleus fibrosis) of the disc begin to weaken and as a result the inner gelatinous layers (nucleus pulposus) start to push on the weakened outer layer. This inner layer can go all the way through the outer layer until it pushes up near the nerve root. The outer layer of the IVD is very rich with nerve endings and can cause a lot of pain if it is irritated. This in turn creates a lot of inflammation or fluid pressure in the space around the nerve which puts pressure on it. If this irritant is not dealt with then neurological symptoms can result such as pain down the leg, numbness, tingling or weakness. This is not meant to scare you but to inform you so that it can be caught early. This type of problem is very treatable with chiropractic techniques commonly used in or office.

So, what are my options for this type of condition you may ask? Treatment should always go from least to most invasive. The least invasive options are chiropractic, physical therapy (they work great when done together), stretching, core strengthening. Next would come steroid injections called epidurals. The last resort should be surgery such as discectomy or spinal fusion. The good news again is that this problem is very treatable if you do develop it and more importantly very preventable with conservative strategies if done in advance of development of the condition. Talking to any of the doctors on staff at Riverview would be a great idea. We are all more than willing to help guide you through the process of prevention or rehabilitation to find a treatment plan that will work for you.

Super Charged Protein Balls


1/2 cup rolled oats 
3/4 cup almond butter 
1/2 cup honey or agave or rice syrup (I use raw natural honey native to our region) 
1/3 cup cocao nibs 
3 TBS chia seeds 
3 TBS ground flax seed 
1 and 1/2 tbs chocolate protein power


1.Combine all ingredients mixing well
2.Chill for 30 minutes in the fridge.
3. Take them out and roll into balls of desired size.

Makes approximately 24 balls
