Lately, it seems that everyone is talking about CBD oil, but what exactly is it? Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of over 100 cannabinoids which can be extracted from the leaves and flowers of cannabis plants. Cannabinoids are chemicals found within the cannabis plant that have some sort of effect on the endocannabinoid system, which is found in all mammals. The endocannabinoid system is especially related to the central nervous system, digestive system, and immune system.
The human body produces its own cannabinoids, such as 2-Arachidonoyl(2-AG) and Anandamide(AEA), and when they are produced within the body they are termed endocannabinoids. The receptors of the endocannabinoid system that are most highly regarded are the CB1 and CB2 receptors. The CB1 receptors are primarily localized in the brain, and the CB2 receptors are primarily localized in the peripheral aspect of the body (i.e. GI tract, tonsils, spleen, immune cells). The endocannabinoid system uses retrograde signaling to send endocannabinoids from the postsynaptic neuron (the neuron receiving a signal) to the presynaptic neuron (the one that sent the signal). This means that the endocannabinoid system can help to modulate a system by telling the presynaptic neuron to increase or decrease its activity. CB1 and CB2 receptors can bind to exogenous (made outside of the body), as well as endogenous (made by the body), cannabinoids. A common concern is that CBD is closely related to THC. In fact, CBD is different from Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which is the cannabinoid that is known to produce a high.
Although both compounds come from a cannabis plant, CBD comes from the hemp strain of cannabis, while THC comes from the marijuana strain. CBD is not psychoactive and does not produce a high. Because it is a different compound, CBD does not show up on drug tests. When considering taking CBD oil, quality matters. Make sure it is third party tested for purity. Aside from being THC free, it should be non-GMO and free of solvents, pesticides, metals, and unnatural substances.
